Truck driving is a rewarding career that offers competitive wages, flexible working hours, and the chance to travel far and wide. Becoming a truck driver can open up new opportunities for growth and advancement in the logistics industry.

There are several steps to becoming a truck driver with no experience. The first step is to obtain your Commercial Driver’s License or CDL, allowing you to drive large commercial vehicles legally. The actions and requirements for obtaining a CDL differ depending on your state and your chosen program.

What is a CDL?

A Commercial Driver’s License is a special license required by the United States Department of Transportation that allows drivers to operate any type of commercial vehicle, such as a tractor-trailer or bus. You must pass written and practical driving tests to obtain your CDL.

The Class A CDL

A Class A CDL is the most comprehensive type of license and requires that you have a valid state driver’s license, pass a written exam, and complete a skills test. With a Class A CDL, you can operate commercial vehicles of any size, including tractor-trailers, flatbeds, livestock carriers, tankers, and more.

Earning Your CDL

At Witte Bros. Exchange, Inc., we provide a comprehensive program for prospective truck drivers at our Troy, MO, headquarters.

Truck Driving School

At Witte’s Truck Driving School, students receive classroom instruction and hands-on training to learn the rules of the road. In phase one, students access our comprehensive online portal for classroom learning and practice driving skills in a closed range and on local roads. After roughly five weeks in the classroom, you’ll take the Class A CDL exam.

Student Trainee Program

After obtaining your CDL, phase two provides four to six weeks of paid training on the road through our Student Trainee program, where you can gain real-life truck driving experience under personal guidance from the industry’s best. Additionally, if you already have a CDL—even without driving experience—you can join our Trainee program to gain more hands-on practice.

Our expert trainers prioritize safety in all driving situations. Phase two of our program allows you to safely navigate real-life scenarios with professional assistance before we dispatch you as a solo over-the-road (OTR) Witte driver.

Dispatch as a Witte Solo Driver

Once you complete phase two, you will be dispatched as an entry-level solo driver for Witte. In their first year, our Truck Driving School and Student Trainee graduates have the potential to earn an average salary of $65,000.

As a solo company driver for Witte, you will be a full-time employee eligible for our benefits package after 60 days. Your job will involve making deliveries and pickups from our partners nationwide and returning to our headquarters in Troy, MO. With excellent earning potential and plenty of opportunities for career growth, our CDL Training graduates can look forward to secure and rewarding employment.
